“Hi, Mom,” Meredith spoke softly into the phone.

She was sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine in her hand, looking down at the streets below. Although it was nighttime, the city of Austin was still bustling, and she could hear the sounds from a local bar as the music wafted her way on the night air.

It was vastly different from life in Sagebrush when people would be at home at this time of night. Here and there, some folks would be out moving around, but mostly just the few who were hanging at the local bar.

That wasn’t so here in Austin. People were coming and going in and out of restaurants, bars, and night clubs. Traffic was rather thick as people enjoyed the nightlife and all the other things the city had to offer.

“Meredith, it’s good to hear your voice! I hardly get to talk to you at all anymore,” Lana Young proclaimed on the other end of the phone.

Meredith chuckled. “I know, Mom. But it was just the week before last when we spoke. Not so long ago,” Meredith said, trying to downplay the reality.

“Yes, but I recall a time when we spoke several times a week. And that wasn’t so long ago. It happened to be right before you transferred to Austin,” Lana said in a knowing voice.

“I know, Mom. It’s just that I’m so busy here. It seems like there’s never any downtime, and every time I finish one patient, there’s always another one waiting to take their place,” Meredith explained.

“Yes, but what about when you’re off? You do get off days and things like that, don’t you?” Lana asked.

“Yes, Mom, but we’re always on the go. There’s always these parties that Neil has planned or dinner events we’re attending. I’m just so tired, and I haven’t had a break at all,” Meredith said.

“In six months?”

“No, I haven’t, Mom.”

“I could imagine you would get burnt out and exhausted trying to keep up such a hectic schedule like the one that you’re keeping,” Lana pointed out.

“Yes.”

“Well, I won’t complain. I’m talking to you now. Is everything okay?”

Meredith smiled and looked out onto the city. That was a good question, one that she needed to ask herself. Was everything okay?

“Yes, it is, Mom. I just wanted to take a moment to breathe. So, I stepped out here on the balcony and decided to call you. I know you would just love it out here, Mom.”

Lana Young’s tinkle of laughter carried through over the phone. “Oh, I don’t know about that.”

“You always loved the city, couldn’t wait for Dad to take you into the nearest big city when we were in the military,” Meredith said.

“That’s because I knew he was taking me on a date night. It wasn’t just the city that I was excited about, but also being with your dad. It didn’t matter where he took me as long as I was with him. And I’m still that way until this day. But I don’t require as much as I once did when I was younger.
